Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is a infectious disease that is caused by Bacteria M. Its also known as TB. Tb mainly affects your body organs and your lungs. It spreads through air and about 1/3 people get it. Tuberculosis has been affecting people for centuries and there has been about 9 million views. Tb is not curable but could be treated with antibiotics. Its identified when doctors give test as a child. people have more of a chance to get TB when a bump occurs after a test on your forearm and no bump might mean that you probably haven’t been affected by TB. The careers to help prevent tuberculosis  is a Infectious disease doctor, Public Health Nurse, and also a Commurcable Disease Investigator.download-1download

New Year Resolution

The word I chose to represent me in 2017 is confident. I chose this word because being confident will help me achieve my goals that i have set for myself. Confident to me means to not have second thoughts or decisions and do what you believe. This is the first time I have made a New year resolution and to me its pretty simple. Being confident hopefully helps me reach my goals and get better at what I do best. For example in sports, being confident will help me want to practice and not give up if I don’t understand. I think the hardest thing will be listening because i tend to talk sometimes in class when the teacher is talking so i need to get better at stay quiet. Being confident shall help me say no to the person trying to talk to me and I will tell them to talk to me later. The people that could help me during this process of being more confident is my mom, dad, teacher, and also coaches. download

Disease research/ Instagram post

In this lab we made a Instagram account of the doctors point of view of the disease and also a account of the disease itself. The disease I chose was AIDS. Aids is a virus that spreads through sexual contact and can lead to death. The purpose of this project was to research about a disease and make a account for the disease and doctor. At first we made a account for the doctor researching the disease. Secondly we made a post about the symptoms of AIDS. Then we drew a picture of where the symptoms occurred. Finally we made the caption about how the disease was transmitted. What we did for the doctors page, we did the same for the diseases account. I am still confused about how people get AIDS in the beginning. The main idea of this project was to research about a disease of your choice, then to make a account for it. I learned that AIDS is transmitted by sexual contact and could lead to death. I also learned that having sex makes more of a chance for you to get AIDS.

Phlegm : Solid or Liquid

In this lab we were trying to see if a liquid can turn into a solid. The tool we did to do this lab was fake mucus. The mucus at first was a liquid but we added glue, borax and also water. I noticed that the more glue we put the more chunkier it got. Also the more water there was the harder it was to make the liquid a solid. The purpose of this project was to see if phlegm (liquid) could turn into a solid. At first we put glue, water, and borax into a cylinder. Next we started to add more and more glue with a little bit more of borax as well so the liquid could dry up. After awhile, it started to become thicker and turned into a liquid. The results of this lab is that a liquid could turn into a solid and a solid could turn into a liquid as well. For example, water is a liquid but as soon as you put it into a freezer it now becomes a solid. I am still confused about how glue made the liquid into a solid when the glue is also a liquid. The big idea of this project was to try to turn a liquid into a solid. I learned that a solid could turn into  a liquid, a liquid could turn into a solid and also liquid could turn into gas. I was surprised that the more glue there was, the faster it became a solid. I discovered that solids can turn into liquids just by melting. For example, how a ice cube is a solid then when its exposed to heat it turns into a liquid.

The wonderful world of cheese

In this lab we had a guest speaker from UCSD that was studying the world of cheese. She was nice enough to come to our class October 12,2016 and share some of the information she gathered with us. Also in this lab we were looking at different kind of cheese she got from a factory and studied it. I noticed that most of the cheese was contained with bacteria. In this case I learned that the bacteria actually helped the cheese in a good way. This made me think about not eating cheese again until I learned that the bacteria was actually good for the cheese. The purpose of this project was to know what type of DNA can live on our communities. At first we were shown slides of what is living on cheese such as microbes, fungi, bacteria, and also organisms. Then we looked at samples of cheese and seen what was on it. After we described what we seen and drew out a picture. Finally we used a microscope to look closely at the samples and were exposed to what was living on the cheese. The results of this lab show that DNA is able to live on other communities such as cheese. I’m still confused about how the microbes get onto the cheese and how the bacteria is created in the cheese. The big idea was to know more about cheese and the living organisms contained on it. I learned that bacteria and fungi was on cheese which really grossed me out. I also learned from the presentation from the guest speaker was that there are many kinds of cheese made all over the world. Finally I learned that microbes eat sugar, protein, and fat that is in cheese.

Ebola outbreak

In this lab we were testing people to see who has Ebola. This virus started to spread in the room and we were discovering people who were positive. I noticed that mostly the girls were tested positive.  I seen that only a few boys had Ebola and most of the girls had it to. Almost all boys were tested negative and some girls. The purpose of this project was to see how much were exposed to the virus and what would we do if this actually happened. At first we got a q tip and inserted it into our mouth to contain saliva from our cheek. Then we dipped the q tip into a container which will identify if we have Ebola or not. Then we put liquids inside the container and mixed our q tips in there. Finally we waited to see if we had either a yellow color which means we had we Ebola or if we had the color blue which meant that we didn’t have Ebola. The results of the lab showed that most boys were positive with Ebola and girls were tested negative. If the virus was exposed into the class then there will be more of a chance for guys to observe it so we made a plan to control the virus. Our plan was to divide the negative and positive people and to test everyone. Then we would bubble rap each other and wear a oxygen mask. Ms. Johal would contain the positive victims with a vaccine. The main idea of this project was to identify the positive and negative victims of the virus Ebola and also to make a plan that would help control the virus in the class. I learned that if the virus would be exposed in  a class with boys and girls, boys would be the ones that would mostly get affected by it. I also learned Ebola has very cruel affects when is in your system. Finally I learned that if the disease was to spread, it would most likely be in another country than America.

Epidemics Past & Present

influenza    In this lab we were assigned to research a disease and write down the history about the disease. The disease I chose was the 1918 flu. I noticed that the 1918 flu killed about 50 to 100 million people and was created by fluid built up in the lungs. The purpose of this lab was to mainly know more about your disease. First I researched about when & where this disease occurred. The answer is in 1918 – 1919, this disease was mainly in Spain. Secondly I researched what the symptoms were and I found that you get a fever, nausea, aches and diarrhea. Finally I searched how it got spread and it said that in world war 1 solders had it and began to spread it.  The results of this lab showed that soldiers spread this disease and it killed many people throughout the world. I am confused on how it spread because wouldn’t the soldiers cough in their arm? The main idea of this project was to learn something new. I learned that this killed about 100 million people and it is still going on.

Gel electrophoresis

In this lab we were testing DNA’s to  find the victims from the crime scene. We used gel electrophoresis to help us find the person who killed the cheerleader. I seen that the DNA from the crime scene wasn’t matching none of the accused people. They were very close but not exact until the last test which was a match. This experiment was to show gel electrophoresis works and how it can help to identify someone. At first we gathered each accused persons DNA, then we got all samples In the gel. As a result we watched studied which was the closes to the victims DNA.  The results of this lab shows that gel electrophoresis is very helpful to find matching DNA samples and conclude the crime scene. Im still confused about how the gel separates the DNA and get it too match the victims. The main idea was to find the murderer using this tool. I learned that a DNA sample cane easily show who it is and this tool is helpful to match DNA. I also learned how to use gel electrophoresis and what it does.

DNA project

th44jqyt34

In this lab or assignment was to create a 3D look of DNA using certain materials that were given to us. The materials were red vines, marshmallows and toothpicks. This was to help us understand what DNA looks like for our labs ahead. I noticed that making a 3D sample of the DNA was going to be difficult but I used my peers for help. While I was doing this project it made me think about how DNA molecules get its shape and figure. The purpose of this project was to make a model and be able to identify DNA by just looking at it. First we began by sticking toothpicks in to the red vines. Next we placed marshmallows on the toothpicks. Then we twisted the backbones (red vines) to make it have the DNA look. Finally we labeled the A,T,G,C in the molecules and then we finished. The results of this lab showed us what DNA looks like and what DNA is. For example, when we were making the model we looked at it plenty of times and that picture of the DNA got stuck in our head so we memorized it. The data shows that your DNA is made up of half of your mom and half of your dad. This began to make me think about how they combine and create one human body. I learned that DNA is what define you as a person and gives you your name tag.
